The single most important thing you can do to take care of your eyes is to get a comprehensive eye exam on an annual basis. However, there are a number of other practices you can adopt to keep your eyes healthy:
- The 20/20/20 rule: For every 20 minutes spent looking at a computer monitor, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to maintain your eyes’ focusing system.
- Moisturize your eyes in flight: Airplane cabin air is quite dry, use artificial tears once every hour.
- Block the sun: The sun's UV rays can hurt your eyes and increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygia, so make sure your eyeglasses or contact lenses offer UV-protection.
- The right light: If you like to read in bed, choose a light bulb that is bright enough so you can see the words without straining (but not so bright that you see a glare).
